Elwood: It’s a hundred and six miles to Chicago, we’ve got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it’s dark, and we’re wearing sunglasses.

Jake: Hit it.

The Blues Brother’s Funky Chicken Recipe (from

10 Chicken thighs, boned
Garlic cloves, chopped
4 sprigs Thyme, chopped
1 tblsp. Tabasco sauce (or less)
3 c. Buttermilk
2 c. Ice
2 c. All-purpose flour
1/2 c. Cornmeal
1 tsp. Black pepper
2 tsp. Salt
1 tsp. Paprika
Canola oil for frying


Mix the garlic, thyme, tabasco, buttermilk, and ice cubes in a bowl.

Cover the chicken with the buttermilk mixture and set aside.

Mix the flour, corn meal, salt, pepper, and paprika.

In a large, cast-iron skillet heat canola oil (about 1 1/2 inches deep) to 360F-370F.

Dredge each piece of chicken in the flour mixture. Shake off excess flour and dip into the buttermilk mixture again, then into the flour. Repeat two more times until well-coated.

Lay the chicken in the hot oil without crowding or touching. Fry for about 10 mins., turning until all sides are golden brown.
